Small windows in wooden frames enshrine the inside of THE IRON DUKE PUB, an English pub with genuine Portuguese soul.
The name is inspired by the Duke of Wellington, the famous English Marshal who defeated Napoleon and freed OPORTO of French occupation. An iron duke, harsh and severe, austere on the fork but fond of good wine. A drip love good-looking that undid the lunge the noble hearts. An eccentric genius whose fathomless is captured in Cross Straight Street nº 9, space trough the light of the Lusitanian passion, nourished by Pedro and Ana, dedicated parents and master publicans of this business born five years ago in Aveiro.
The building where the bar is located was rehabilitated with an English aesthetic vein. Taking advantage of this new aspect, a tea house was first built which was later replaced by the English pub The Iron Duke, a meeting place for festivities, business, food and drinks in the purest English tradition. It also maintains the closing bell (although the closing hours are visibly Portuguese).
This bar of exquisite decoration has already won the hearts of the people of Aveiro: the familiar atmosphere and the 'at ease' of the owners unleashes close relations with a clientele who appreciates the many drinks available (including over one hundred and fifty brands of beer) eight to eighty years.
Customers also know about Ironduke's banter: a very curious poster that said only 'rules for dating my daughter' left many customers baffled. For some time they asked the couple about the auspicious message, until finally they discovered that Pedro and Ana were going to have a daughter, an immediate reason for congratulations and jubilation.
Another emerging tradition was, to the delight of the most habitual customers, the offer of a shot of Licor Beirão whenever Pedro would become a father. And, of course, it is almost obligatory to mention two events of great importance for this piece of England in Portugal: the stand-up comedy sessions, which count on three comedians in monthly performances and the already famous bananero that was born in Braga.
According to the story, on a certain night from December 24 to 25, a lady had an excess of banana stock in her commercial space and decided to offer it to customers. The tradition spread and is now, in its synthesis, a moment of friendship between friends in the Christmas season that begins to appear in Aveiro, in strength, thanks to The Iron Duke.
A different concept. A trip to England, to the Inglês Pub and all the familiar imagery it carries. These are values that reverberate from their travel to London whose echo is felt in the historical figure that gives it its name, the spirit and attitude.
