In the many journeys we make during our lives, we sometimes have to leave the comfort of home. Whether in leisure or work, finding a pleasant space can be a challenge, because we are often confronted with the more impersonal and formal facet of large hotel groups. Ricardo Figueiredo, founder of Les Canaux, located at Rua Cmte. Rocha e Cunha, nº 76, proposes a different solution. In this cozy hostel, the motto is to make guests feel at home.
Ricardo, always wanted to have and manage his own business. Born and raised in Aveiro, he completed the marketing course in 2017, but he was already at that time intercalating studies with punctual work. He inclusively made a year and a half stop during his studies to work on the famous Autocarro Bar, of which his father, Guilhermino Figueiredo, owns. He then worked for a year and a half at Decathlon as a salesman. It was an enriching experience for him, since he was able to know the functioning of a company that escaped the family sphere, and also to gain comprehensive organizational skills. Finally, he worked as a product manager at Pecol for half a year, thus adding another area of expertise to his resumé.
Meanwhile, a building on Rua Cmte. Rocha e Cunha was almost finishing the renovations and Ricardo saw the perfect opportunity to let his dream soar. On November 30, 2017 he opened the doors of Les Canaux, whose name refers to the four most popular channels in the city of Aveiro: the Canal Central, the Canal do Cojo, the Canal das Pirâmides and the Canal de São Roque. Four is also the number os rooms that can be found in this cozy hostel, impeccably clean and with great lighting. The common space consists of a living room and kitchen that guests do not hesitate to use, and Ricardo has already seen some interesting gastronomic exchanges. The biggest witness of this exchange will be, nevertheless, the wall of the living room, full of post-its and notes of appreciation, leaving in the hostel a true treasure trove of memories. The size of the establishment means that sometimes it is also possible for families to rent the entire space, in order to ensure greater privacy. The building where Les Canaux is located was not only a question of opportunity, but also a key strategic element for the proper functioning of the business, since it is close to the train station, two supermarkets and several pastry shops.
His project is still taking its first steps, however, Ricardo's professionalism is evident in the small details, in the bag with ‘raivas’ (regional candy from Aveiro) that awaits each guest when entering each room, with the care with which he adjusts each cushion to have every room perfectly set up. The trait that best defines him will be, however, the taste he has in receiving, in accommodating, in talking with whoever passes by his hostel ...
The logo represents some of the elements that comprise the heritage of Aveiro: the moliceiros, the houses of Costa Nova, the salt and the sea. Places like Les Canaux, which enhance the art of receiving guests and travellers, should also be considered part of this heritage. The comfort of a home away from home, is waiting for you!
