At Rua Conselheiro Luís Magalhães are those who struggle everyday so that the hamburger may be rightfully recognized as a gastronomic heritage. And in the Alzuleich, meals are not just made for the mouth: the food weighs as much as the art. At least what the view sees brings a flavor between the self-made decoration and the artistic pampering of the best quality hamburger. In addition to all the elements of the menu having a history, inheritance and handwritten title, the interior seems designed to be eaten with the eyes and has an explanation: sometimes a low budget triggers creativity, so Fernando Simões and Maria João Gonçalves set to work and designed the Alzuleich- More than food according to their tastes.
Although a native of Aveiro, the couple worked in Lisbon and brought some inspiration. The family grew and the children made them unleash a desire they did not anticipate, to possess a business of their own. He worked in the Transport Industry. She worked in Food Safety. But both of them were excellent cooks at home. Can there be a more familiar business?
The name of space makes us run the imagination, well before we are seated at the table. Alzuleich is the Arabic word for tile and the delights that come out of the kitchen are nothing more than techniques and / or types of it. Dishes are branded with such names as The carving, The polychromatic, The baluster or The sponge, some traits that embody this irreverent case of success. A success based on an environment that recognizes the excellence of those who dare to risk.
Unsurprisingly, the concept of hamburgers has been taken over in Portugal since a couple of years ago. As an icon of American cuisine, the hamburger was introduced to American culture by German immigrants, somewhere between the 18th and 19th centuries. As a rule, sandwiched between two portions of bread, we find a set of ingredients like beef - traditionally beef, although chicken or fish are no longer foreign elements in the dish - lettuce, tomato, ketchup and a little as far as creativity leads and stomach allow.
The massification of the concept brought a tendentially negative connotation. But with all the rule, of course, the exception with a necessary demystification: the hamburgers are not all the same and the Alzuleich is here to show, illustrate, and prove it. The space is pleasurable, equipped with 2 floors, forming something like an extension of the ones living room. If the concept was adjusted to the conjuncture of the restoration reigning in the city, also the menu underwent slight changes in order to better fall on the palate of the locals. The pesto sauce lost the coriander, the lemonade lost its cinnamon and the potatoes, instead of homemade, became pre-fried: all due to the suggestions of the customers, listened to by the owners and later put into practice.
Fernando and Maria João what it is to be foreigners in the region, for having left the city where they were natural and then returning, or simply daring to risk a market in a region not given to experimentalism. It is precisely this challenge that assumes the role of Alzuleich main driving force: to incorporate the local culture and to challenge the status quo of restoration in the most difficult market in the country. The loyalty of some customers, added to the feedback of social networks, is giving clues about the success of the enterprise. It's an indicator that the Alzuleich is here to stay.
Here's the warning and an additional spoiler: here, lemonade really tastes like lemon.
