Hops, malt, yeast and water. These are the four main ingredients for brewing beer and, which, at a glance, might seem like an easy task, but it in fact is this an ancient art dating back to circa 6000 B.C. Nowadays, beer is known by all people and is supposed to be the third most popular drink in the world. However, the vast diffusion and consumption results in a certain dilution of what constitutes a good beer. Pedro Novo, manager and owner of Lovecraft Beershop, in Aveiro, represents the desire to revitalize the passion for the most accurate methods of creating this drink.
He interested in the beer brewing culture since his adolescence. While he couldn’t always taste the drinks that fascinated him, he acquired nevertheless knowledge of styles and ingredients and, years later, managed to shape his vision of a business establishment with the Kittens Irish Pub, where one could sample numerous varieties of beer. However, when he came into contact with the distribution of beers in Portugal, he realized that it was somewhat limited and decided to create the first distribution dedicated to craft beer in portuguese lands, the Original 1920. Their willingness to make other types of more refined beers known also gained new momentum when he organized the first beer festival in Aveiro, the Ibeeria.
In spite of the success achieved with the Kittens Irish Pub, Pedro sold it to dedicate himself exclusively to his new project, the Lovecraft Beershop that opened in 2015, in the pedestrian street of Aveiro’s theater and which later moved to nº 5 to Guilherme Gomes Fernandes Street . This new store, whose parent company is Beers & Tailors (the latest designation of Original 1920), has a truly eclectic aspect, always attached to the bubbly liquid. In here, customers or resellers can not only buy beers, but also have training on production processes and tasting experiences. As for consumption, Lovecraft Beershop isn’t exactly a bar, but of course one can taste the exotic drinks that fill the shelves. The establishment’s has a rather exotic and unique decoration, a steampunk blend, reminiscent of the vapors and pipes used in the fermentation, which points to the technological speculation of the beginning of the century with a touch of H.P. Lovecraft from where the brand gets inspiration for the name. It’s above all a door to the 'Wonderful World of Beer' as Pedro likes to put it.
Sales have reflected a growing interest in the appreciation of beer, especially with the creation of the first drink of the brand, the Black Mama, produced in the district of Aveiro and which is already marketed nationally. Other specialties that have contributed to the excellent beer brewing culture that the house advertises include English Samuel Smith’s Chocolate beer, Hazelnut Rogue from the United States, Belgian Gulden Draak, Wild Beer Madness, German Kapuziner Weiss and the Swedish beer with pecan and chocolate from Omnipollo. If you start getting thirsty, don’t worry it's perfectly normal. And although beer is the focus of the establishment, cider and mead are also marketed by virtue of similar production methods. For entrepreneurs and adventurers, the store also offers a section to make beer at home.
There is no excuse for not drinking a fresh one! Or warm, as this millenarian liquid dictates.
