Clube de Ténis de Aveiro story

In September of 1981, tennis lovers and practitioners all around came together with the purpose of creating a club that in the near future, would provide the necessary conditions to play this sport.

The Aveiro City Council was then asked to transfer the existing court in the Municipal Park (the only one up to that date). In May 1982 the Club was officially founded and its statute was published. In the year 1984 the club’s sports facilities (3 courts) and their lighting were open to the public.

With the opening of social facilities, in 1988 a 4-year cycle of great importance for the Club CTA in the regional and national tennis panorama is initiated, with the performance of one national and four international competitions.

As a logical consequence of their work, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers recognized the Aveiro Tennis Club in May 1991 as a Legal Person of Public Utility (D.R. No. 122 II series of 28 May 1991).

In September 2013 with the decommissioning of the courts and social facilities of the municipal park, the Club CTA moved to the Baixa de Santo António park featuring 3 tennis courts in hard surface and two paddle tennis courts in synthetic grass.

This Club CTA has been a district pioneer in the introduction of paddle tennis, a rapidly growing sport, especially in the last two years where there’s been a real “explosion” of interest for this sport that has been increasingly captivating the Portuguese people.
